When a Christian is feeling empty, it’s essential to address both the spiritual and practical aspects of their life. Here are some steps they can take to find the cause and overcome it:

1. Prayer and Meditation: Spend time in prayer and meditation, seeking guidance and comfort from God. Reflect on Scripture and ask for clarity and wisdom.

2. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Consider journaling to express your emotions and gain insights into what may be causing your emptiness.

Keep a journal to jot down thoughts and feelings. I like to use Notion.so and my Accountbook as my journal. Regularly review your journal entries to identify patterns or areas of concern, and pray for God’s guidance and seek for Godly counsel in addressing them.

3. Seek Counsel: Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or spiritual mentor for support and guidance. Sometimes, talking to someone else can provide perspective and encouragement.

Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” We see examples of mentorship and guidance throughout Scripture, such as Elijah mentoring Elisha (2 Kings 2:1-15).

4. Evaluate Priorities: Assess your priorities and commitments. Are you spreading yourself too thin? Consider cutting back on non-essential activities and focusing on what truly matters.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus teaches, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This highlights the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God above all else.

5. Address Spiritual Needs: Engage in activities that nourish your spiritual well-being, such as attending church, participating in worship, reading Scripture, and serving others.

Psalm 1:2-3 compares those who meditate on God’s law to trees planted by streams of water, which yield fruit in season. Regular and intentional studying of Scripture and spiritually nourishing activities will strengthen our souls and fill us with God’s presence. (See Psalms 16:11)

6. Healthy Habits: Take care of your physical health by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and practicing self-care activities that rejuvenate you.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and encourages us to honor God with our bodies. Taking care of our physical health allows us to better serve God and others.

7. Identify Triggers: Pay attention to situations or triggers that produce your feelings of emptiness. Once identified, take proactive steps to remove, replace or reduce these triggers.

Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Being mindful of influences that impact our spiritual well-being helps us maintain a healthy and strong faith.

8. Set Goals: Establish meaningful goals and aspirations that align with your values and heavenly purpose. Having a sense of direction and working towards achievable goals will bring greater fulfillment and purpose. An aimless life is a living death.

9. Community Engagement: Connect with a supportive community of believers who can offer encouragement, fellowship, and accountability. Surrounding yourself with spiritual influences will lift your spirits and provide companionship. The key here is not to wait for people to be the friend you desire. Because you don’t attract the friend you desire, you attract the friend that you are. Be the friend you wish you had and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by the friends of your dreams.

By taking proactive steps to address the root causes of emptiness and nurturing your spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being, you can find healing and renewed purpose in your Christian journey.
