Who moved upon the author of the 1843 chart to device a prophetic chart?

Their faith was greatly strengthened by the direct and forcible application of those scriptures which set forth a tarrying time. As early as 1842, the Spirit of God had moved upon Charles Fitch to devise the prophetic chart, which was generally regarded by Adventists as a fulfillment of the command given by the prophet Habakkuk, “to write the vision and make it plain upon tables.” No one, however, then saw the tarrying time, which was brought to view in the same prophecy. After the disappointment, the full meaning of this scripture became apparent. Thus speaks the prophet: “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” [Habakkuk 2:2, 3.] {4SP 241.2}


What vision did the Spirit of God move Charles Fitch illustrate on the 1843 chart?

Among these prophecies was that of Habakkuk 2:1-4: “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what He will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.” {GC 392.1}

As early as 1842 the direction given in this prophecy to “write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it,” had suggested to Charles Fitch the preparation of a prophetic chart to illustrate the visions of Daniel and the Revelation. The publication of this chart was regarded as a fulfillment of the command given by Habakkuk {GC 392.2}

Note: The 1843 chart was actually made in 1842 by one of our pioneers by the name of Charles Fitch. 300 copies of this chart was printed and used by the Millerites to proclaim the second coming of Jesus in 1843. Of course Jesus didn’t come in 1843 and it caused the first disappointment to the early Advent band before “the great disappointment” which many of us are familiar with. There was actually more than 1 disappointment. Even though it was put together in 1842 it is called the 1843 Chart because of the 1843 mistake. If you are struggling to tell the two apart at first this is a great identifier of each chart. The chart that says 1844 is called the 1850 chart. Later in this study we will see how this mistake needed to be on the chart otherwise it could not truly be a fulfillment of Habakkuk 2.

Before we continue please look at the 1850 chart on the top right corner underneath “Visions of Daniel & John” and notice it says “Published by Otis Nichols, Dorchester Massachusetts” Now let’s begin to study this chart.

Monday we returned to Dorchester where our dear Brother Nichols and family live. There in the night God gave me a very interesting vision, the most of which you will see in the paper. God shewed me the necessity of getting out a chart. I saw it was needed and that the truth made plain upon tables would effect much and would cause souls to come to the knowledge of the truth. {15MR 210.4} November, 1850 Note: God specifically gave Mrs. White a vision about O. Nichols chart and she saw the need “that the truth made plan upon tables”. She got that language from directly from Habakkuk. Also notice the 1850 chart was being developed in November of that year when she penned this quote.

What did God show would cause many to accept the 3 angel’s messages?

God showed me the necessity of getting out a chart. I saw it was needed and that the truth made plain upon tables would affect much and would cause souls to come to the knowledge of the truth.–Letter 26, 1850, p. 1. (To Brother and Sister Loveland, November 1, 1850.) {5MR 202.4} Note:Remember the 1850 chart is being put together in November of 1850.

On our return to Brother Nichol’s, the Lord gave me a vision and showed me that the truth must be made plain upon tables, and it would cause many to decide for the truth by the third angel’s message with the two former being made plain upon tables. I also saw it was as necessary for the paper to be published as for the messengers to go, for the messengers need a paper to carry with them containing present truth to put in the hands of those who hear and then the truth would not fade from the mind, and that the paper would go where the messengers could not go. Other things I saw, which will appear in the paper. . . . {5MR 203.1} Note: As SDA’s our message are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd angel’s messages. It is integral that we understand those messages and proclaim them. The servant of the Lord just said the 1850 chart would be God’s method to “cause many to decide for the truth by the third angel’s message”. If this is the tool God tells us he will use wouldn’t it be a good idea for us to use it? Not only that, she continues to say speaking of the angel’s messages “the two former being made plain upon tables”. The 1843 chart we studied contains the 1st and 2nd angel’s messages. Both charts would be of great value to implement when we teach.

What was happening in Nov of 1850 when the 1850 Chart was being published?

Our conference at Topsham was one of deep interest. Twenty-eight were present; all took part in the meeting. {5MR 226.1} Sunday the power of God came upon us like a mighty rushing wind. All arose upon their feet and praised God with a loud voice; it was something as it was when the foundation of the house of God was laid. The voice of weeping could not be told from the voice of shouting. It was a triumphant time; all were strengthened and refreshed. I never witnessed such a powerful time before.–Letter 28, 1850, p. 1. (To the church in Brother Hasting’s home, November 7, 1850.) {5MR 226.2}

How did God feel about “other charts” besides the 1843 & 1850 charts?

I saw the chart-making business was all wrong. It originated with Brother Rhodes and was followed out by Brother Case. Means has been spent in making charts and forming uncouth disgusting images to represent angels and the glorious Jesus. Such things I saw were displeasing to God. I saw that God was in the publishment of the chart by Brother Nichols. I saw that there was a prophecy of this chart in the Bible, and if this chart is designed for God’s people, if it [is] sufficient for one it is for another, and if one needed a new chart painted on a larger scale, all need it just as much. {13MR 359.1}

Note: The chart Otis Nichols published in 1850 was the chart which “God was in” and clearly “there was a prophecy of this chart in the Bible” was Habakkuk. Also notice “this chart is designed for God’s people”. She has nothing but good things to say about these two charts. They are designed for us to use and proclaim the everlasting gospel.

I saw that it was a restless, uneasy, unsatisfied, ungrateful feeling in Brother Case that desired another chart. I saw that these painted charts had a bad effect upon the congregation. It caused a light, chaffy spirit of ridicule to be in the meeting. {13MR 359.2}

I saw that the charts ordered by God struck the mind favorably, even without an explanation. There is something light, lovely, and heavenly in the representation of the angels on the charts. The mind is almost imperceptibly led to God and heaven. But the other charts that have been gotten up disgust the mind, and cause the mind to dwell more on earth than heaven. Images representing angels look more like fiends than beings of heaven. I saw that the charts had for days and weeks occupied Brother Case’s mind when he should have been seeking heavenly wisdom from God, and should have been growing in graces of the Spirit and the knowledge of the truth. {13MR 359.3}

Note: Charts plural were ordered by God. Habakkuk said “write the vision make it plain upon tables” there needed to be another chart besides the 1843 chart in order to fulfill this prophecy. But even the images “struck the mind favorably”, are “heavenly” and lead minds “to God and heaven” “even without an explanation.” “But the other charts” by “a restless; uneasy, unsatisfied, ungrateful feeling in Brother Case” made him desire “another chart” had nothing good spoken of.

I saw that if the means that has been wasted in getting out charts had been spent in getting out the truth clear before the brethren in publishing tracts, etc., it would have done much good and saved souls. I saw that the chart-making business has spread like the fever.–Manuscript 1, 1853, pp. 6, 7.

Even though EGW doesn’t approve of chart making businesses does that mean we shouldn’t use charts?

You have given much study to the matter of how to make the truth interesting, and the charts you have made are in perfect accord with the work to be carried forward. These charts are object lessons to the people. You have put intensity of thought into the work of getting out these striking illustrations. And they have a marked effect as they are presented to the people in vindication of truth. The Lord uses them to impress minds. Instruction has been given me clearly and distinctly that charts should be used in the presentation of truth. And these illustrations should be made still more impressive by words showing the importance of obedience. –Letter 51, 1902. {Ev 203.2}

Note: This quote is speaking of illustrations used by an evangelist. She saw in vision “clearly and distinctly” God desires us to use charts to in the presentation of truth. The illustrations of charts become object lessons and impress the minds deeper when this counsel is heeded.

Brother Simpson dwells especially on the significance of the prophecies in the books of Daniel and the Revelation. By means of ingeniously contrived charts and symbolic representations, he holds the attention of the people, while he endeavors to preach the word. Through this effort hundreds will be led to a better understanding of the Bible than they ever had before, and we trust that there will be many conversions. Those who attend his lectures and are not converted, must practically reject the Word of God. {RH, November 29, 1906 par. 17}

Time prophecies dealing with math, dates, and history are difficult to follow many times.

How does God desire us to explain the prophecies more effectively?

The use of charts is most effective in explaining the prophecies relating to the past, the present, and the future. But we are to make our work as simple and inexpensive as possible. The truth is to be explained in simplicity. In no case are we to follow the example of outward display set by the world.–Manuscript 42, 1905. {Ev 203.3}

Note: When God gave Daniel and John their visions, He himself used very descriptive and graphic images to teach them the prophetic truths God desired us to learn. Do you believe we would be in danger if we followed God’s example in illustrating the vision of Daniel and Revelation? The use of charts is a very effective way to make the truth simple. When dates, math, and the history are connected with pictorials it “giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” Psalms 119:130. Because by doing so, enables the words of God to enter and impress our minds. That’s what God meant by “write the vision and make it plain upon tables”. When prophecies are written on tables they become more plain and easier to comprehend and retain.

What has God given SDA’s to point out every waymark we need for heaven?

God has given us His word that we may become acquainted with its teachings and know for ourselves what He requires of us. When the lawyer came to Jesus with the inquiry, “What shall I do to inherit eternal life?” the Saviour referred him to the Scriptures, saying: “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” Ignorance will not excuse young or old, nor release them from the punishment due for the transgression of God’s law; because there is in their hands a faithful presentation of that law and of its principles and claims. It is not enough to have good intentions; it is not enough to do what a man thinks is right or what the minister tells him is right. His soul’s salvation is at stake, and he should search the Scriptures for himself. However strong may be his convictions, however confident he may be that the minister knows what is truth, this is not his foundation. He has a chart pointing out every waymark on the heavenward journey, and he ought not to guess at anything. {GC 598.1}

Note: Regardless how safe we feel we are listening to our pastor. We can’t take his word on what The Word says. This is dealing with the salvation of our souls. Why leave our salvation in the hand and whim of another man? When we ask Jesus “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus Himself replies by the testimony of Jesus which is the spirit of prophecy by saying “He has a chart…and he ought not to guess at anything.” If as a SDA you would like to know where to begin studying the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd angel’s messages God gave us two tables to point us to every waymark and point on the heavenward journey. It’s also profitable to point out she contrasts how a minister is not our foundation but we have a chart.

Whose hand directed the 1843 chart and how many mistakes were on it?

The Lord showed me that the 1843 chart was directed by his hand, and that no part of it should be altered; that the figures were as he wanted them. That his hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until his hand was removed. {RH, November 1, 1850 par. 10}

Note: Some people use this quote to claim the 1843 chart was full of mistakes therefore we shouldn’t use it or believe in it. But I want you to see there was “a” mistake not multiple. This singular mistake had affected “some of the figures”. (Webster’s 1828 dictionary says Figure n. : In arithmetic, a character denoting a number; as 2. 7. 9.) This mistake was because God’s “hand was over and hid” this mistake for a reason. We will study this reason soon. The mistake that God covered and hid was that there was no 0 year in history. The next year following 1 BC would be AD 1. So 0 BC or AD 0 doesn’t exist. Therefore if you can’t see this and you try and count 2300 days from 457 you would add an extra day in history that never existed which would shorten by one year when the 2300 days actually ends. That’s why when you look on the 1843 chart it shows the 2520 and the 2300 days ends in 1843 on the top right corner of the chart. As you can see this mistake affected “some of the figures”. That doesn’t mean the 2520 or the 2300 figures are error for “the figures were as he wanted them”. But when the 1843 chart was made “none could see it, until his hand was removed.” Soon we’re going to see when His hand was removed and what the mistake was. Until then I’d like you to notice this statement was publish in the Review and Herald the same month and year the 1850 chart was being published.

Then I saw in relation to the “Daily,” that the word “sacrifice” was supplied by man’s wisdom, and does not belong to the text; and that the Lord gave the correct view of it to those who gave the judgment hour cry. When union existed, before 1844, nearly all were united on the correct view of the “Daily;” but since 1844, in the confusion, other views have been embraced, and darkness and confusion has followed. {RH, November 1, 1850 par. 11}

The Lord showed me that Time had not been a test since 1844, and that time will never again be a test. {RH, November 1, 1850par. 12}

When did “Adventists discover the mistake” “in some of the figures”?

In the summer of 1844, Adventists discovered the mistake in their former reckoning of the prophetic periods, and settled upon the correct position. The 2300 days of Daniel 8:14, which all believed to extend to the second coming of Christ, had been thought to end in the spring of 1844; but it was now seen that this period extended to the autumn of the same year, [SEE APPENDIX, NOTE 1.] and the minds of Adventists were fixed upon this point as the time for the Lord’s appearing. The proclamation of this time message was another step in the fulfillment of the parable of the marriage, whose application to the experience of Adventists had already been clearly seen. As in the parable the cry was raised at midnight announcing the approach of the bridegroom, so in the fulfillment, midway between the spring of 1844, when it was first supposed that the 2300 days would close, and the autumn of 1844, at which time it was afterward found that they were really to close, such a cry was raised, in the very words of Scripture: Matthew 25:6 “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” {4SP 248.2}

Note: “the mistake” was in the reckoning or calculations of the prophetic periods (plural).

What was the mistake?

I saw the people of God joyful in expectation, looking for their Lord. But God designed to prove them. His hand covered a mistake in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. Those who were looking for their Lord did not discover this mistake, and the most learned men who opposed the time also failed to see it. God designed that His people should meet with a disappointment. The time passed, and those who had looked with joyful expectation for their Saviour were sad and disheartened, while those who had not loved the appearing of Jesus, but embraced the message through fear, were pleased that He did not come at the time of expectation. Their profession had not affected the heart and purified the life. The passing of the time was well calculated to reveal such hearts. They were the first to turn and ridicule the sorrowful, disappointed ones who really loved the appearing of their Saviour. I saw the wisdom of God in proving His people and giving them a searching test to discover those who would shrink and turn back in the hour of trial. {EW 235.3} Jesus and all the heavenly host looked with sympathy and love upon those who had with sweet expectation longed to see Him whom their souls loved. Angels were hovering around them, to sustain them in the hour of their trial. Those who had neglected to receive the heavenly message were left in darkness, and God’s anger was kindled against them, because they would not receive the light which He had sent them from heaven. Those faithful, disappointed ones, who could not understand why their Lord did not come, were not left in darkness. Again they were led to their Bibles to search the prophetic periods. The hand of the Lord was removed from the figures, and the mistake was explained. They saw that the prophetic periods reached to 1844, and that the same evidence which they had presented to show that the prophetic periods closed in 1843, proved that they would terminate in 1844. Light from the Word of God shone upon their position, and they discovered a tarrying time–“Though it [the vision] tarry, wait for it.” In their love for Christ’s immediate coming, they had overlooked the tarrying of the vision, which was calculated to manifest the true waiting ones. Again they had a point of time. Yet I saw that many of them could not rise above their severe disappointment to possess that degree of zeal and energy which had marked their faith in 1843. {EW 236.1} Note: Habakkuk says there will be a tarrying time. This tarrying time took place because of the 1843 mistake. If they didn’t think Christ would come in 1843 and didn’t put it on the chart it could not be a fulfillment of Habakkuk. The scripture continues to say “make it plain upon tables” plural. Therefore after the 1843 table the Bible prophesied 2468 years before that another chart would be inspired by God in Habakkuk. She also says “the prophetic periods” plural would terminate in 1844. That shows she’s aware of more at least 2 prophetic periods that end in 1844. But according to the pioneers and the other Adventists they believed there were three.

When should the figures on the 1843 chart be changed?

I saw that the truth should be made plain upon tables, that the earth and the fullness thereof is the Lord’s, and that necessary means should not be spared to make it plain. I saw that the old chart was directed by the Lord, and that not a figure of it should be altered except by inspiration. I saw that the figures of the chart were as God would have them, and that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none should see it till His hand was removed. {SpM 1.3}

Note: People look at the quote in {EW 74.1} which says “…the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered…” and say the 1850 chart is wrong because no one should alter the 43 chart. But as you see it’s not to be changed except by inspiration. She said this in 1852 and we already learned God inspired Otis to publish the 1850 chart.

After the 43 mistake was corrected how much of the message remains the truth?

I do not wish to ignore or drop one link in the chain of evidence that was formed as, after the passing of the time in 1844, little companies of seekers after truth met together to study the Bible and to ask God for light and guidance. . . . The truth, point by point, was fastened in our minds so firmly that we could not doubt. . . .The evidence given in our early experience has the same force that it had then. The truth is the same as it ever has been, and not a pin or a pillar can be moved from the structure of truth. That which was sought for out of the Word in 1844, 1845, and 1846 remains the truth in every particular. Letter 38, 1906, pp. 1, 2. (To the Wahroonga Sanitarium Family, January 23, 1906.) {1MR 52.2} Note: Sister white state in 1906 which is 62 years past the great disappointment and 43 years after the Seventh-Day Adventist church was established in 1863. She says specifically the messages of “1844, 1845, and 1846 remains the truth in every particular. Not one thing is different from the faith that the Adventist once held in those years.

Who labored to lay the foundation of the Seventh-Day Adventist church?

God has given me light regarding our periodicals. What is it?–He has said that the dead are to speak. How?–Their works shall follow them. We are to repeat the words of the pioneers in our work, who knew what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our work. They moved forward step by step under the influence of the Spirit of God. One by one these pioneers are passing away. The word given me is, Let that which these men have written in the past be reproduced. And in the Signs of the Times let not the articles be long or the print fine. Do not try to crowd everything into one number of the paper. Let the print be good, and let earnest, living experiences be put into the paper. {CW 28.1}

Note: She’s speaking of the pioneers and says they “labored to lay the foundation of our work.” Not only did they lay our churches foundation but we are counseled to “repeat the words of the pioneers” & have what “these men have written in the past be reproduced”. That tells us we should read the writings and publications of the pioneers, after all they did “lay the foundation of our work” wouldn’t it be profitable to read our foundations.

When was our foundation laid by the pioneers?

The warning has come: Nothing is to be allowed to come in that will disturb the foundation of the faith upon which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and 1844. I was in this message, and ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the light that God has given us. We do not propose to take our feet off the platform on which they were placed as day by day we sought the Lord with earnest prayer, seeking for light. Do you think that I could give up the light that God has given me? It is to be as the Rock of Ages. It has been guiding me ever since it was given. Brethren and sisters, God lives and reigns and works today. His hand is on the wheel, and in His providence He is turning the wheel in accordance with His own will. Let not men fasten themselves to documents, saying what they will do and what they will not do. Let them fasten themselves to the Lord God of heaven. Then the light of heaven will shine into the soul-temple, and we shall see the salvation of God. {GCB, April 6, 1903 par. 35}

Note: “Ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and 1844” We have been building upon the foundation of our faith. The word upon means our foundation was laid in 42 43 and 44 by our pioneers and ever since we have been building upon it. Almost 60 years after 1844 she still says she believes the message which was given in 42, 43, and 44. Guess what message that was. The same message which are on the two Habakkuk charts. She continues to say “it is to be as the Rock of Ages.” The rock is Christ and that’s why Christ is in the center of each chart literally and spiritually because if you look he’s on the cross, spiritually because Christ is the truth and our foundation is the rock of ages which to EGW were the messages on the charts.

Which message are we to proclaim today?

We have, as had John, a message to bear of the things which we have seen and heard. God is not giving us a new message. We are to proclaim the message that in 1843 and 1844 brought us out of the other churches. We need the Holy Spirit to kindle in our hearts the zeal and earnestness that were then seen among God’s people. I thank the Lord that there are still living a few who can remember those days, and who know whereof they speak. {RH, January 19, 1905 par. 22}

Which truths should we be studying now?

Temptations are being brought in by men who have been long in the truth. The truths that we received in 1841, ’42, ’43, and ’44 are now to be studied and proclaimed. The messages of the first, second, and third angels will in the future be proclaimed with a loud voice. They will be given with earnest determination and in the power of the Spirit. (Letter 75, 1905) {15MR 317.1}

Note: Ten years before she died in 1915 she told us what was taught in 41-44 is not only the truth but they “are not to be studied and proclaimed.”

Why should all the messages from 1840-1844 be studied and proclaimed now?

All the messages given from 1840-1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people who have lost their bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches. (Letter 54, January 30, 1906) {21MR 437.1}

How much of our faith was changed or denied since 1844?

The past fifty years have not dimmed one jot or principle of our faith as we received the great and wonderful evidences that were made certain to us in 1844, after the passing of the time. The languishing souls are to be confirmed and quickened according to His word. And many of the ministers of the gospel and the Lord’s physicians will have their languishing souls quickened according to the word. Not a word is changed or denied. That which the Holy Spirit testified to as truth after the passing of the time, in our great disappointment, is the solid foundation of truth. Pillars of truth were revealed, and we accepted the foundation principles that have made us what we are–Seventh-day Adventists, keeping the commandments of God and having the faith of Jesus. {SpTB07 58.1}

I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body. God looked upon them with approbation. I was shown three steps– the first, second, and third angels’ messages. Said my accompanying angel, “Woe to him who shall move a block or stir a pin of these messages. The true understanding of these messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs upon the manner in which they are received.” I was again brought down through these messages, and saw how dearly the people of God had purchased their experience. It had been obtained through much suffering and severe conflict. God had led them along step by step, until He had placed them upon a solid, immovable platform. I saw individuals approach the platform and examine the foundation. Some with rejoicing immediately stepped upon it. Others commenced to find fault with the foundation. They wished improvements made, and then the platform would be more perfect, and the people much happier. Some stepped off the platform to examine it and declared it to be laid wrong. But I saw that nearly all stood firm upon the platform and exhorted those who had stepped off to cease their complaints; for God was the Master Builder, and they were fighting against Him. They recounted the wonderful work of God, which had led them to the firm platform, and in union raised their eyes to heaven and with a loud voice glorified God. This affected some of those who had complained and left the platform, and they with humble look again stepped upon it. {EW 258.3}

What happens if we remove one pin from the foundation of truth God gave us?

“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent” (Revelation 2:5). They are not to give heed to seducing spirits. They are not to remove one pin from the foundation of truth that the Lord has built up frompoint to point by the ministration of the Holy Spirit. If one point is yielded, there is no surety that other points will not be discarded; and point by point, the structure of truth will be assailed and discarded. {10MR 46.1}

You must never, never seek to lift one pin, remove one landmark, that the Lord has given to his people as truth.” {GCDB, February 20, 1899 par. 14} “There is to be no change in the features of our work. It is to stand as clear and distinct as prophecy has made it. We are to enter into no confederacy with the world, supposing that by so doing we could do more work.” {GCDB, February 20, 1899 par. 15}

We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and his teaching in our past history. We are now a strong people, if we will put our trust in the Lord; for we are handling the mighty truths of the word of God. We have everything to be thankful for. If we walk in the light as it shines upon us from the living oracles of God, we shall have large responsibilities, corresponding to the great light given us of God. We have many duties to perform, because we have been made the depositaries of sacred truth to be given to the world in all its beauty and glory. We are debtors to God to use every advantage he has entrusted to us to beautify the truth of holiness of character, and to send the message of warning and of comfort, of hope and of love, to those who are in the darkness of error and sin.” {GCDB, February 20, 1899 par. 16}

Note: This is a well-known phrase “we have nothing to fear for the future, expect as we shall…” Is “shall” past present or future? Future. When she is making this statement it is a prophecy. She is not saying if we forget but rather the one thing we have to fear is that we “shall” forget the way the Lord has led us, and his teaching in our past history.” Not only did she prophecy that we will forget our Millerite history but also our “teaching in our past history.” Friend, what’s on the 43 and 50 chart is the “teaching in our past history” and we have forgotten.

What message does God want us to know we have?

Those who stand as teachers and leaders in our institutions are to be sound in the faith and in the principles of the third angel’s message. God wants His people to know that we have the message as He gave it to us in 1843 and 1844. We knew then what the message meant, and we call upon our people today to obey the word, “Bind up the law among My disciples.” In this world there are but two classes,–the obedient and the disobedient. To which class do we belong? God wants to make us a peculiar people, a holy nation. He has separated us from the world, and He calls upon us to stand on vantage ground, where He can bestow on us His Holy Spirit. {GCB, April 1, 1903 par. 42}

“While praying at the family altar, the Holy Ghost fell on me, and I seemed to be rising higher and higher, far above the dark world. I turned to look for the advent people in the world, but could not find them–when a voice said to me, ‘Look again, and look a little higher.’ At this I raised my eyes and saw a straight and narrow path, cast up high above the world. On this path the advent people were traveling to the city, which was at the farther end of the path. They had a bright light set up behind them at the first end of the path, which an angel told me was the midnight cry. This light shone all along the path, and gave light for their feet so they might not stumble. And if they kept their eyes fixed on Jesus, who was just before them, leading them to the city, they were safe. But soon some grew weary, and they said the city was a great way off, and they expected to have entered it before. Then Jesus would encourage them by raising His glorious right arm, and from His arm came a glorious light which waved over the advent band, and they shouted, Hallelujah! Others rashly denied the light behind them, and said that it was not God that had led them out so far. The light behind them went out, leaving their feet in perfect darkness, and they stumbled and got their eyes off the mark and lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down into the dark and wicked world below.” {1SM 62.1}

Now follows the passage said to be in the original work, but not found in Experience and Views nor in Early Writings: {1SM 62.2} “It was just as impossible for them [those that gave up their faith in the ’44 movement] to get on the path again and go to the city, as all the wicked world which God had rejected. They fell all the way along the path one after another.” {1SM 62.3}

In every age there is a new development of truth, a message of God to the people of that generation. The old truths are all essential; new truth is not independent of the old, but an unfolding of it. It is only as the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new. When Christ desired to open to His disciples the truth of His resurrection, He began “at Moses and all the prophets” and “expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Luke 24:27. But it is the light which shines in the fresh unfolding of truth that glorifies the old. He who rejects or neglects the new does not really possess the old. For him it loses its vital power and becomes but a lifeless form. {COL 127.4}

The interests of the cause of present truth demand that those who profess to stand on the Lord’s side shall bring into exercise all their powers to vindicate the advent message, the most important message that will ever come to the world. For those who stand as representatives of present truth to use time and energy now in attempting to answer the questions of the doubting ones, will be an unwise use of their time. It will not remove the doubts. The burden of our work now is not to labor for those who, although they have had abundant light and evidence, still continue on the unbelieving side. God bids us give our time and strength to the work of preaching to the people the messages that stirred men and women in 1843 and 1844. {MR760 30.1}

The word of the Lord, spoken through His servants, is received by many with questionings and fears. And many will defer their obedience to the warning and reproofs given, waiting till every shadow of uncertainty is removed from their minds. The unbelief that demands perfect knowledge will never yield to the evidence that God is pleased to give. He requires of His people faith that rests upon the weight of evidence, not upon perfect knowledge. Those followers of Christ who accept the light that God sends them must obey the voice of God speaking to them when there are many other voices crying out against it. It requires discernment to distinguish the voice of God. {3T 258.2}

Those who will not act when the Lord calls upon them, but who wait for more certain evidence and more favorable opportunities, will walk in darkness, for the light will be withdrawn. The evidence given one day, if rejected, may never be repeated. {3T 258.3}
